When my daughter was about a year old she had a huge reaction to a short clip of cheerleading on TV. She usually hardly notices the television, so my husband and I were surprised when she started clapping and shrieking with glee with her eyes riveted to the girls on the screen. As a former cheerleader a million years ago, I was pretty tickled. So we ordered it for her and she's been enjoying it for about five months. She shows little to no interest in her big brother's flashy Pixar and classic Disney DVDs or whatever is on PBS kids, but for some reason this will hold her interest when I need to get something accomplished without her "help." :)
This is a very low key, no pressure video that provides a toddler with a general introduction to cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics, as they watch children (including a few boys) and young women participating in each of these activities. The DVD is divided into segments - cheer, dance, and gym - and you can choose to watch them all in a row or just one at at time. It is not meant to be at all instructional. For example, it doesn't demonstrate the ballet positions or contain choreographed cheer or dance routines for a child to learn. It is simply a montage of the activities with nondescript background music and the soothing voice of a female narrator occasionally making comments such as, "Can you shake your pom poms?" or "Let's see how the big kids do it..."
The general format is that the activity is introduced and then slightly more specific skills or apparatus associated with the activity are casually demonstrated. For example, after visually introducing cheerleading with various clips and the narrator saying, "The girl is cheerleading!" and "Look at him cheerlead," the focus turns to pom poms. First they show younger kids informally playing with pom poms at the park in regular street clothes. Then they move on to elementary or middle-school aged girls using pom poms at what looks like cheer practice. Finally they show high school or college aged girls in uniforms doing a sideline routine with pom poms, at a game. Then the subject moves onto some other aspect of cheering, like using a megaphone.
I would not recommend this DVD for a child much older than two or three, unless the subject matter was of intense interest to them or maybe to specifically introduce a child to one of the activities. For example, if your three-year old is signed up for gymnastics class and is nervous about it, this would give her an idea of what to expect - what the inside of a gym looks like, what everyone wears, what the equipment is like and how it is used, the types of things she'll be learning and doing, etc. My son (almost four) will occasionally watch it with his sister and sometimes jump around and say that he is "cheerleading." But the format is almost Baby Einstein or Baby Genius like, and would likely be too young and simplistic for an older child. Overall, I think this is a good purchase for a 12-24 month old.

I bought this for my daughters 3rd birthday. She LOVES to cheer, she has attended the local cheer camp where she learned simple cheers like "Two bits, Four bits.." and to jump around a little. I thought this video would be more of the same, little cheers and maybe this is what the splits looks like etc... but it was nothing of the sort! She learned NOTHING from it and doesn't really like the music. The "Let's dance..." make it seem like the kid will do some of it, but not any more than she does when a good song comes on the radio. This was very much in lines with the Baby Einsteins type videos.

I have a 15 month old daughter who enjoys watching videos which show children being active. Music and Action are a must to keep her attention. When I first popped this DVD into the player she watched for a few minutes but then decided her toys and books were more fun. The next time I played it she was sitting in her highchair eating a snack and since she was trapped - she watched. She laughed and clapped as the toddlers jumped, cheered and danced across the screen. She has since become my little cheerleader, and has learned how to use her little blankies as Pom-Poms! It is quite adorable. I will definitely buy another DVD in this set!
